Frequently asked questions

I have never tried therapy. What would working with you involve?
We would usually meet weekly, at the same time, either in person or over Google Meet, and sessions are 50 minutes long. The structure and focus of sessions are completely tailored to you and what you need, with options to explore more creative ways of expression (imagery, movement) as well as talking. Sometimes you might want to sit in silence for a bit, too. That's also fine.
How will I know if you are the right therapist for me?
It can take a few sessions to work this out, and to feel more comfortable, especially if this is your first time in therapy. Generally speaking, it's important to find someone you feel you can speak openly with and ultimately build a supportive, trusting relationship with. Finding a therapist is a bit like dating or meeting new friends: it's not always going to work out, and sometimes it involves a bit of trial and error. You can find out more about me on the About page and How I Work page. No hard feelings if that's not me.
Do I have to commit to a minimum number of sessions?
There is no minimum commitment and the first session is usually a good opportunity to get to know each other and work out if it's a good fit. That said, it does often take some time to settle into therapy. The first few sessions might feel especially hard or even a little awkward, so it's also okay to give it time. It's really important to find the right therapist for you.
What happens in the first session?
I usually collect some basic details from you at booking. The first session is then dedicated to your story: getting to know you and why you've decided to start therapy. It's also a chance to make sure you feel comfortable speaking to me, and an opportunity to ask any questions.

I'll do a little housekeeping at the start. We'll discuss how sessions work and go over confidentiality, scheduling, payment, and cancellation policy. I also send this information out at the time of booking.

For online sessions: please make sure you have access to a device with a decent internet connection and working camera, and somewhere comfortable and private to sit. I'll send a link five minutes before the session. You do not need your own Google account to join.
How do you accept payment?
I accept payment by cash, card or bank transfer. All sessions are charged in GBP. If you are based outside the UK and are worried about bank or card charges for international payments, get in touch and we can discuss options.

Generally, all sessions are paid for in advance, with the first session payable at the time of booking. More detail on payment and cancellation policies is available upon enquiry.
I may struggle to afford regular therapy. Do you offer any lower cost places?
There are a limited number of reduced-fee spaces available for trainee therapists, students, and those currently on sick leave due to stress-related difficulties. Please feel free to get in touch to enquire about availability.

As the practice grows, I also hope to offer a couple of fully funded places each year. If you'd like recommendations on other places to access lower-cost therapy, please don't hesitate to reach out.

What clients say

"I came to therapy during a difficult period in my life and felt completely lost and hopeless. Through our work together, I've been able to move on, rebuild my confidence and feel more like myself again. I'm so grateful for the support I've received."

Client A

"Working with Karly has given me a space to slow down and reflect in a way I haven't before, and I have gained a much deeper understanding of patterns in my relationships and why I respond the way I do. This has been life changing for me."

Client B

"I started therapy when I was feeling very lost and depressed. With Karly's support and insight, I have worked through and integrated big parts of my shadow self. I have learned valuable tools to process my emotions rather than feeling controlled by them, and as a result I feel empowered, calmer and better able to handle challenges."

Client C

"I was nervous about starting therapy but Karly made me feel at ease from the first session. She listened without judgement and allowed me to explore things I've never really been able to talk about before."
